BRAND ARCHITECTURE FOR PORTFOLIOS

Order and clarity for companies with several products, sub-brands or businesses.

What brand architecture is, and when you need it

Brand architecture defines how a company’s brands, sub-brands and products relate to each other: what they share, what sets them apart and which brand vouches for which. Without it, customers don’t understand what they are buying, teams invent new rules with every launch, and each new product makes the portfolio harder to read.

Signs you need brand architecture:

  • you have several products or lines that look like different brands;
  • you have acquired or merged with other companies;
  • you are launching a new product and don’t know whether it gets its own name;
  • customers don’t connect your products to each other;
  • each department or distributor uses the brand differently.

The three basic models. There is no single right model. We choose the structure that fits the business, not the trend:

  • a single brand: one name for everything, with clear descriptors for each product; the most efficient use of marketing spend;
  • independent brands: each product has its own name and identity; useful when audiences are very different;
  • a hybrid model (master brand): the main brand gives trust, sub-brands give differentiation; a good fit for growing companies, but it needs clear rules.

What you get at the end:

  • a map of the current portfolio, showing what helps and what confuses;
  • the recommended architecture model and the role of each brand;
  • naming rules for new products and lines;
  • shared visual rules and differentiation rules: colour, logo, packaging;
  • a transition plan, if the structure changes.

We explain the difference between strategy and design in Brand strategy vs design.

What we built for others, and how we work

Real projects.

  • Green Corporation: we created a master brand around the “G” symbol and brought Green Pack, Green Point and Green Unit under it, each with its own identity, differentiated by colour.
  • Solaris: the natural food range had outgrown its old master packaging. We rebuilt the portfolio system and kept the distinctive yellow across the whole architecture.
  • Turabo: a single packaging concept now carries 15 coffee products.

Architecture comes before design. If a portfolio goes through a rebrand or gets new packaging without clear architecture, every design decision becomes a negotiation. With the architecture in place, design becomes a system that is easy to extend. When sub-brands need new names, we also handle naming.

Timelines and costs. Both depend on the number of brands and products in the portfolio, how many markets you cover and how much the structure changes. We confirm the timeline and an estimate after a first conversation. For a proposal, write to us.

Why BroHouse. Projects are led directly by the founders. We do both the strategy and the design, so the architecture never stays a theoretical document: it shows on the packaging, in the identity and in every new launch.

OUR BRAND ARCHITECTURE PROCESS

Brand architecture is not structure for structure's sake. It is strategy made visible.

Portfolio audit

We review the brands, products and existing confusion.

Roles and hierarchy

We define which brand vouches for which and the role of each.

Architecture model

We choose the structure that fits the business, not the trend.

System rules

We set the rules for naming, colour, logo and packaging.

Transition

We plan the order of changes and support teams as they apply them.

Frequently asked questions about brand architecture

What is brand architecture?

It is the structure that defines how a company's brands, sub-brands and products relate: what they share, how they differ and which brand vouches for which.

When do I need brand architecture?

When you have several products or lines, after an acquisition or merger, when you launch new products often or when customers don't connect your products to each other.

What are the brand architecture models?

A single brand, independent brands and a hybrid model with a master brand and sub-brands. We choose based on audiences, budget and growth plans.

What do I get at the end of the project?

A portfolio map, the recommended model, the role of each brand, naming rules, shared and differentiation visual rules, and a transition plan.

Is brand architecture useful for small companies?

Yes. A clear structure from the start makes growth easier and cheaper than reorganising after the portfolio has become complicated.

How does architecture influence design?

It defines what is shared and what differs: colour, logo, packaging and names. Without it, every new product is a separate decision. With it, design becomes a system.

How long does a brand architecture project take?

It depends on the number of brands and products, the markets and how much the structure changes. We confirm the timeline after a first conversation.

Do you also create names or packaging for sub-brands?

Yes. We can work on architecture, naming, identity and packaging together, so the rules show directly on the shelf and in communication.
